IDM Alternative: Automatic Video Detection That Stays in Chrome
Internet Download Manager (IDM) is known for the "Download this video" panel it adds to web players. It is also a paid Windows program. If what you want is the detection, not the desktop app, this page shows where IDM still wins and what Vidora does inside Chrome.
Quick answer
Switch from IDM if you mainly save videos from web pages and would rather not run a paid Windows program after the 30-day trial. Vidora is a Chrome extension that detects the video in the page and saves HLS and DASH streams as one MP4 with sound, free right now. Keep IDM if you rely on its multi-connection acceleration, its scheduler, or a download manager for more than video.
IDM vs Vidora at a glance

Why people look for an IDM alternative
They want the detection without leaving Chrome
On the Turkish forum Technopat, a user described exactly what IDM gave them: when a video opened, it was detected and download options appeared. Their question was whether "another quality app that can do this" exists (translated from Turkish, 24 July 2025). In a thread titled "IDM is not supported by Chrome", another wrote: "I really don't want to use a browser other than Chrome" (17 July 2025). For the record, as of 24 September 2026 the Chrome Web Store listing of IDM Integration Module shows 20,000,000 users and an update dated 11 June 2026.
The button disappears or downloads fail
Recent Chrome Web Store reviews of the extension include "No longer working" (22 September 2026) and "HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden" (21 September 2026). On Technopat, a March 2026 thread is titled "IDM download button does not appear" (translated from Turkish). The listing still averages 4.0 out of 5 from 3.8K ratings.
Streaming sites where IDM does not catch the link
On the Vietnamese forum VOZ, a user trying to save a series from a streaming host reported that "IDM and NEAT download can't catch the link" (translated from Vietnamese, 15 June 2024). The workaround suggested in the thread was to find the m3u8 playlist and feed it to yt-dlp on the command line. Vidora reads HLS playlists like that one in the page, with no command line, though no tool works on every site.
Where IDM is still the better choice
- Raw speed. IDM advertises acceleration of up to 8 times, plus resume and scheduling. Vidora makes no speed claim.
- More than video. IDM is a download manager for Windows, not only a video tool. Vidora only handles video and audio found in web pages.
- Active development. Version 6.43 Build 11 shipped on 23 September 2026, after several builds a month in 2026.
- A known quantity. Its extension shows 20,000,000 Chrome users, the trial needs no email or credit card, and a lifetime license is available.
Its fans are loyal: an Ekşi Sözlük user called it irreplaceable, adding that with other tools "you ask for a video and they download bits and an html file" (translated from Turkish, 4 September 2025). Rebuilding those bits into one file is the part Vidora is built for.
How Vidora detects and saves videos in Chrome
Vidora watches what the page loads and lists the videos it finds in its popup, sorted by relevance, with ads pushed down. From there it downloads HLS (.m3u8) and DASH (.mpd) streams and saves them as a single MP4 with sound, merging separate audio and video tracks into one file. It handles HLS streams encrypted with standard AES-128.
- On the player. A discreet button appears when you hover a video. It downloads the video the popup ranks first for the tab, which is not always the one under your cursor when a page has several. You can turn it off in Settings.
- Right-click. "Download with Vidora" appears on videos, audio and links, and downloads the clicked media address as is.
- Keyboard. Alt+D downloads the first video in the popup's list.
- Several videos. "Download all" or "Download selected" queues them, two at a time.
- Tracking. A side panel shows progress, pause, cancel and retry. It never opens by itself.
No tool catches everything. Vidora refuses YouTube and DRM-protected services, refuses live streams (it offers to record the playback instead), and says so on a card rather than failing silently. Before switching, the per-site compatibility list gives the honest status for each platform. Our guide to downloading embedded videos from any page shows how detection works on sites without a download button.
Switch in under a minute
- Install Vidora from the Chrome Web Store. Nothing is installed outside Chrome and there is no account to create.
- Open the page with the video and start playback if the player waits for a click.
- Hover the video and click the Vidora button, or open the Vidora popup and pick the video and its quality.
- Follow progress, pause or retry from the popup or the side panel. The file lands in Downloads/Vidora.
