How to Download Vimeo Videos in 2026

A practical, no-fluff guide to saving Vimeo videos for offline use. Tested methods only, including private videos and DASH streams.

By Romain Gouraud, founder 9 min read

Vimeo hosts more high-quality video than most people realize: courses, conference recordings, indie films, client deliverables, and corporate webinars. Yet saving a Vimeo video for offline access is dramatically harder than saving a YouTube video, and the reason has nothing to do with copyright. It is a delivery architecture problem.

This guide walks through every method that actually works in 2026, in order from easiest to most technical. We focus on legitimate use cases: archiving your own content, saving courses you have purchased, backing up videos you have explicit permission to download. If a tool you relied on suddenly died, the focused rundown of working Vimeo download methods after the API break explains what Vimeo changed and which approaches survived.

1. Why Vimeo is trickier than YouTube

YouTube serves most videos as a single MP4 file the browser can save with a right-click on the video element (when allowed). Vimeo does not. Most Vimeo embeds are delivered as DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP): a small JSON playlist that lists hundreds of tiny segment URLs, with separate streams for video and audio. Some still expose progressive MP4 files, which Vidora prefers when present.

Concretely, when your browser plays a Vimeo video, it does this in real time:

  1. Fetches the player page from player.vimeo.com
  2. Parses a JavaScript object called window.playerConfig to extract the playlist URL
  3. Fetches the JSON playlist (often hosted on vimeocdn.com or akamaized.net)
  4. Downloads dozens to thousands of MP4 segments in parallel
  5. Reassembles them into a smooth playback buffer

To save a Vimeo video, you have to replicate that pipeline: fetch all segments, concatenate them in order, and mux the video and audio tracks into a single MP4 file. If you want to understand the underlying format better, our guide explains how HLS and M3U8 streaming works in plain English. This is why generic "right-click save" extensions fail on Vimeo, and why most free downloaders end up with broken audio or no audio at all.

The shortcut every guide forgets to mention: a small subset of Vimeo videos are still served as direct MP4 files (the "progressive" rendition). When this exists, downloading is trivial. The hard problem is DASH.

2. Method 1: Browser extensions (recommended)

Browser extensions automate everything we just described. The user clicks a button, the extension does the work. The catch is that most free extensions in the Chrome Web Store are either broken on Vimeo, riddled with ads, or both. If you want a detailed, head-to-head comparison before picking one, our dedicated Vimeo HLS downloader guide tests each option against real private Vimeo streams and explains exactly what breaks at each step. For a broader look across HLS platforms, the best HLS downloader Chrome extension review covers the field with a buyer's decision framework.

Step-by-step with Vidora

  1. Install Vidora from the Chrome Web Store (works on Edge, Brave, and any Chromium browser too).
  2. Open the page that contains the Vimeo video or embed. Vidora spots the player as soon as the page loads and resolves the playlist in the background; you do not need to press play.
  3. Click the Vidora icon in your toolbar. The video appears in the popup with a quality selector (1080p preselected when available, plus every other height Vimeo offers).
  4. Pick your quality and click Download. The extension fetches all segments in parallel (eight at a time), muxes them, and saves a single MP4 to your Downloads folder.

The whole process takes the same time as watching the video, often a bit faster thanks to parallel segment fetching. A 30-minute 1080p Vimeo video is typically saved in two to four minutes on a normal connection.

Why this method wins

3. Method 2: Network inspector (advanced)

If you cannot or do not want to install an extension, you can extract a Vimeo video manually using the browser DevTools. This requires comfort with command-line tools but works on any device with Chromium-based DevTools. The first step is locating the stream URL in the Network tab, which follows the same logic whether you are on Vimeo or any other HLS-based platform.

Step-by-step manual extraction

  1. Open the Vimeo video page, then open DevTools (F12 or Cmd+Opt+I).
  2. Switch to the Network tab. Filter by "playlist.json" or "playlist". This filters the request that returns the DASH manifest.
  3. Press play on the video. The playlist request fires, and you see it in the Network tab.
  4. Click the request, then copy its full URL (right-click, Copy link address).
  5. Run a tool like yt-dlp from your terminal: yt-dlp "PASTED_PLAYLIST_URL"

This approach has a learning curve, and a change in Vimeo's manifest format can break it until the tool is updated.

4. How to download private Vimeo videos

Vimeo has five privacy settings, and the honest answer differs for each one, so treating them as a single case leads people to try tools that were never going to work. What decides the outcome is the mechanism behind the restriction rather than how private the video feels.

Two of them impose no access check at all. A public video obviously has none, and an unlisted one is merely hidden from Vimeo search while remaining fully reachable by anyone holding the link. Both download exactly as described in the sections above. A third, domain restriction, is checked against the Referer header of the request, which means it is satisfied by being on the authorized page: this is the setting nearly every online course platform uses, and it is why lessons on Thinkific or Kajabi behave so differently from a genuinely private upload.

The other two are enforced through a session cookie: password-protected videos and videos restricted to specific Vimeo accounts. Vidora resolves Vimeo videos with a request that carries no cookies, a deliberate choice because Chrome rejects credentialed responses from the CDN hosts involved, so on those two settings the player configuration never comes back and the extension finds nothing to download. The full breakdown, including what to do instead in those two cases, is in the guide to private Vimeo videos and what works for each restriction type. Once you do have the raw stream, the usual next step is to convert the m3u8 segments into a single MP4 for playback anywhere.

5. Common errors and how to fix them

Error: "Download stops at 95 percent"

The CDN rejected one or more segments, usually because the signed playlist URL expired mid-download. Vidora reports the failure rather than saving a truncated file. Fix: reload the Vimeo tab so a fresh playlist is resolved, then restart the download.

Error: "Video downloaded but no audio"

The downloader fetched only the video stream and ignored the separate audio stream. This is a bug in older free downloaders that predate proper DASH muxing. Use a tool that explicitly supports audio + video muxing (Vidora does this with mp4-muxer). If you used yt-dlp manually, add --audio-format mp3 --merge-output-format mp4.

Error: "Vidora does not see the video"

Pressing play is not required: Vidora scans the page for the Vimeo player when it loads and again when the page changes. If the embed was injected late (a lesson that builds its player after a click, for example), reload the tab and open the popup again. If nothing appears after a reload, the video is probably password-protected or account-private, which Vidora does not support.

Error: "403 Forbidden on segments"

The CDN is rejecting the request because the playlist URL is missing its signature (the h= hash that unlisted videos carry) or because the origin check failed, typically when a domain-restricted video is opened on vimeo.com instead of the authorized page. Vidora resolves the playlist from the page you are on, so both conditions are met. If you are using a manual tool, copy the complete playlist URL including its query string, and stay on the authorized page when you grab it.

The legality of downloading a Vimeo video depends on three factors: who owns the video, what the platform terms of service say, and what your local laws allow.

Generally legal:

Generally not legal:

Vidora and other downloaders are technology, not legal advice. The responsibility for using them appropriately rests with you. We never bypass DRM (Widevine, FairPlay, PlayReady) and respect platform protections, which means commercial streaming services like Netflix or Disney Plus cannot be downloaded by any of these tools, regardless of what their marketing claims.

If you are evaluating cost before committing to a paid tool, our comparison of free m3u8 downloader tools includes free options tested on Vimeo streams specifically, so you can see exactly what the no-cost alternatives can and cannot handle.

7. Frequently asked questions

Can I download a Vimeo video on mobile?

Not with Vidora. Chrome extensions do not run in mobile Chrome on Android or iOS, so there is no supported mobile path today. Download on desktop and transfer the file.

What is the maximum quality I can download?

Whatever quality the source video was uploaded in. Vimeo serves 360p, 540p, 720p, 1080p, and increasingly 4K. Vidora preselects the best rendition up to 1080p; 1440p and 4K appear in the quality picker when Vimeo provides them, as an opt-in.

Does Vidora work on Vimeo OTT and Vimeo Showcase?

Not verified. Vidora resolves videos served from vimeo.com and player.vimeo.com only. Vimeo OTT and Showcase sites run on their own domains and player, and we have not tested them, so treat them as unsupported.

Why is my downloaded MP4 larger than the original?

Some downloaders re-encode the video, which adds overhead. Vidora does NOT re-encode: it muxes the original streams as-is, so the output should match the source bitrate closely.

Can I batch-download a list of Vimeo videos?

Yes, within a tab. The popup's Download all button queues every video detected on the current tab and downloads them two at a time. The queue does not span tabs: for videos spread across several pages, open each one and start its downloads separately.
